Wind Knots And Tailing Loops
It's been over a month since the staff here at "Angler119's Delaware River Fishing Reports" has assembled the questions that have come in from contributors. Shame on them. I'll do my best to see that they get them to me more promptly in the future.
Chris asked about the fall fishing. With the summer continuing into the first week of October, as yet, we haven't had any. The predicted weather change coming mid week should cool things off and start the fall fishing. Usually, with the cooler water temperatures of the fall, the pseudos' hatch during the warmest part of the day, (2:00 'til 5:00). They are found on all of the rivers but with the current drought conditions, I'm not at all sure where there will be fishable water. As the water temperatures continue to cool, both isos and hebes should also hatch. The isos start a bit later in the day than the pseudos' and the hebes get going as the last isos are hatching.
Ron K asked if I use head cement - no, if I get the fly back far enough on the hook I take as many as a dozen turns with the whip finisher to shape the head and leave it at that.
Jim N. asked if I've ever caught a tiger trout. Two, both many years ago in the middle section of the WB.
Ed S. asked if the WB water will clear up this fall. I'm told that the color in the water is silt that stays in suspension in the layer above the thermocline and that when the thermocline is depleted the silty water is sucked out in the releases. It also is able to settle out on the reservoir floor. When the process is completed the water will again be clear. Right now the more water they release, the dirtier it gets.
Ron K. Hats off to you on the Bell Notes who sang I've Had It. I had the song in my head but had no clue who sang it.
Jim N. asked why they don't release more water from Pepacton. It is a smaller water shed and doesn't refill as quickly and it is preferred drinking water for NYC. That said, there have been times when they have increased the release to help meet the minimum flow requirement down river.
Jack asked what I do to see flies when fishing late. If I'm fishing towards the west the water takes on a light silver color and I will put on a dark colored fly, (iso or olive), if I'm fishing with the western sky to my back and the water appears black I put on a Cahill or other light colored fly.
Jason asked what weather app I used. Weather Underground. It is nothing special, but gives a ten day forecast, hourly predictions, which help some if rain is coming, and has local radar.
There was a large group of rafts, kayaks and canoes that came down the WB concerning many that this was going to be a regular occurrence. I reported on it at the time. I don't know if it was an isolated incident of if there were other groups on the WB. My best guess is that the low water conditions down river made floating there impossible, (the river is much wider and in drought conditions, much shallower), and that it is not likely to be a problem under normal conditions.
Try To Remember (the kind of September)- got a variety of answers, Jim D. named The Brothers Four which was the song I was thinking of.
