The best way to beat the heat.
With another hot sunny day on tap, I got out early to try the BR. One 10 inch rainbow and three fall fish later I was in the car heading for the BK. Fished two pools there, saw three fish rise and got them all to eat. Drove from there to the UEB and followed Rte. 30 all the way up to Corbett. Never saw a bug or a rise.
It was noon and I debated heading home for lunch or going west on 17 to Deposit. Ended up at Wendy's in Deposit where without hesitation, I was able to order a #5 with a medium drink and fries. The price has gone up since my visit last year and I managed to get a blob of the dressing on my shirt while eating the sandwich but rehydrated by the humongous (medium) Coke and fortified by the chicken sandwich and fries, I was ready for combat fishing on the WB.
At 1:00 PM the sun was beating down on the river, caddis were hatching but I could not see a rising fish. Wade fishermen and drift boaters were casting for all they were worth (maybe I need to move up my appointment with the eye doctor). Decided to fish a run that had a little pace and a broken surface. There was one fisherman well down the run. Worked down to him without seeing a rise. He said he had rising fish and had had a good morning. He graciously agreed to let me fish the risers furthest down river from him. After about an hour he said "The pool's all yours, I've had a great morning". He seemed to be about my age and tells time about the way I do (it was well past 2:00). The feeding fish were all good ones and were fussy but were eating duns. Got several refusals, but hooked enough quality fish to make it a good day. Got to the car at 3:45, and drove back to camp. Before I knew it it was 6:00.
With the temp on the porch 90, there was no debate. Back to the cold water, where there were caddis spinners, rising fish and very few (relatively speaking) fishermen. Was it good? Oh my yes. The fish don't suffer fools, bad casts or poorly tied flies. They refused the fly on the end of my best of casts far too often but from 7:00 until 9:00 I can't think of a better way to spend your time. Fished with two shirts on and drove back to camp with the heater on and a smile on my face.
