Rainy days and Mondays - - -

So, I drove down to the fishing camp this morning, no, not to fish, that was never a possibility.  I went to mow the grass, level the concrete floor on the porch before the new carpet arrives, fill the bird feeders and put the primer coat on the new screen door.  Arrived about 10:00 and at 2:15 I was on the road heading back home. There were but a modest number of boats to be seen both on the way down and on the way home. At about 2:30 I counted five cars parked beside the cabins at WBA and but one at DRC. Ran into a bunch of caddis on Rte. 17 at the game lands and saw three pontoon boats below the Rte. 17 bridge in Deposit. What to do?  Stay home and watch the USGS stream flow reports.  My maximum cfs levels for wade fishing the river system (I'm old but I know the rivers reasonably well)  are as follows:  WB there are a few places where I can wade at 2,000 cfs, EB several places can be waded again at 2,000 cfs, UEB 1,000 cfs is my cut off point, the BR I can fish in a couple of p

I've got better things to do.

Hung the new porch screen door yesterday.  Escaped with a couple of minor scrapes and one brused finger.  If things ever dry out I'll paint it, put the screening back in and cross that job off the list. Forgot to mention that the Hummingbird showed up at the feeder Monday. Saw a Northern Oriole in the apple tree this morning and put his feeder out. Within an hour he was having a drink.  Will pick up a few oranges to put out on my next trip to the store. When I finished the screen door job clean up, I closed the camp and headed for home.  Stopped in Deposit for a look at the WB.  Five boat trailers went by while I was walking from the parking lot to the shop door. Drove down to the Men's Club and counted ten boats between the town bridge and the clubhouse.  It was about 3:30 and I never saw a bug or a rise. The water was 1,900 cfs above Oquaga!  Heard it raining during the night and checked the flows this morning to see how the rivers fared. Everything is blown out with all rive

It's got to be the goin' not the getting there that's good.

Yesterday I spent the day mostly just driving around.  Most parts of the river were to high to wade effectively, some had too many boats and the BK had too many fisherman.  It was nobody's loss but mine.  I'd been spoiled.  From the time I got here until last Thursday, I could fish wherever I wanted, boats were limited by the low water.  There were bugs hatching with fish up eating them. The worm has turned.  Boats can go anywhere they want and waders are limited.  The freestones have entered the doldrums.  The Hendricksons are hatching on the WB and the UEB and they are both too high to wade confortably (safely). Today I stopped whining and just fished.  The BK is at a nice wading level. The Hendricksons are waining, the Apple caddis are now above Horton and with todays rain and cool temps they never made an appearance.  Most of the weekend warriors have departed, leaving still, a plethera of grumpy old men.  I picked a pool that I have never fished before, made the quarter mi

Two Out of Three Ain't Bad.

When I retired over 20 years ago there was no further use for an almost full box of business cards.  They sat untouched on a shelf in the closet for several years. Was about to toss them away when I thought of a way to use them.  They are small, sturdy and the back side is blank just perfect for recording the size of the fish I catch.  Have been using them for years (in fact they are almost gone). Well, last year I closed out the season on November 10th, with what was my best ever catch of fish for any day in November.  The catch itself wasn't remarkable but for November it sure was.  The details of the catch were duly recorded on one of my old business cards.  It was the end of the season.  Hung the vest in the closet (with the card still in it) and went to Florida for the winter. This April, after returning from Florida, the vest (with the old business card from November still in the left hand top pocket), was hung on the hook inside the rear door on the driver's side.  On Ap
