Patience is a scarce commodity.

Arrived at the Lordville Estate about 1:00, unpacked, made up a batch of hummingbird food, filled the feeder, ate lunch and headed out to got reacquainted with the river system after a week of no fishing. The WB, UEB, EB and BR are fishable only by boat. The Willow can be waded as can portions of the BK (with care).  Drove along the WB around 2:00  and saw no bugs or risers. Talked with the occupants of a couple of boats about 4:30, who said the fishing was "So so",  not as good as yesterday".  Perhaps the bright sun and increase in water temp got things out of kilter. Spent an hour and a half on the BK. The Hendricksons are done at least on the lower section. There were a few March Browns and some egg laying caddis. Wade fishermen were at least getting their feet wet while one guided drift boat occupied one of the more wade able pools all afternoon. Saw and was able to reach a handful of rising fish. All but two ignored my offerings. Two rainbows took pity on me, ate

More than you need to know about A-119.

Chris asked  multiple part question that, after being unable to fish for the last seven days, at least gives me something to write about. On the personal side, I was born and have spent my entire life in upstate (Syracuse area) New York. Went to Syracuse University undergrad and law school. Practiced law for thirty three years, and retired 23 years ago. Jean and I have a combined family of four, David and Rick run the Troutfitter shops in Deposit and in Syracuse, Corinn is a teacher in Central Square and Candice is a volleyball coach and photographer in Ft. Meyers, Florida. Jean and I have been married for going on forty years. We spend the entire winter together down in the Florida Keys. When there was still bonefishing this included about five hours most days together on a bonefish skiff, which is perhaps the ultimate test of a marriage. (Jean is as good a skiff poler as you could ever find). In the summer Jean spends her time with her family, goes on walks with her sister several

And now you know the rest of the story.

Brian who must be as  frustrated as I am with the high water conditions, asked the best question. What will be the effect of the proposed increased flows during the aqueduct repair?  Didn't look it up but my recollection of the 2015 "leak panic" was that they did a test boring for construction of a proposed hydro generator and had the misfortune of drilling right into a fault in the rock that has been leaking since the dam was built. When the water surged up out of the drill hole they made the decision to maximize the release and thus drain the reservoir. I think this started in early July (and this is important) because the current release is scheduled to start on June first which quite possibly makes a huge difference in the effects of the drawdown on the fishery.. Why? The reservoir releases come from below the thermocline (think of it as a Plexiglas layer separating the densest coldest water from the less dense warmer water). Once the thermocline sets up, the cold  w

Killin' Time Is Killin" Me.

It's 7:30 Tuesday night, and I'm sitting at the kitchen table at the Lordville Estate, Perfect Manhattan in hand, prepared to do a "Wind Knots & Tailing Loops" page except that no one has asked any real questions.  Dennis, who asks more than twice as many questions as anybody else, did so again, but really Dennis, what do I use to clean my fly line? I am the worst gear guy on the river. Clean my line no more than two or three times a season and then only if so much water is clinging to the line that it keeps splashing on my glasses (which I clean several times a day). Your second question about what's up with the BK is clearly whining but because it's your first offense of the year, I'll accept a plea to the lesser charge of mewling. For the record, I have fished the BK twice and found a good number of both rainbows and browns up and feeding. The third question is legit. I made a good killing shot (I'm a terrible shot with a bow) on a six point,

How high's the water momma?

WB -8,000 cfs EB - 10,000 cfs BR - 20,000cfs BK - 5,000cfs Both reservoirs spilling.   Go out and shoot a turkey.
