The bugs are hatching, its time to start catching.

It was not the day I expected at all.  Finished turning over and breaking up the soil in the garden, pruned some limbs off the flowering quince, talked myself into waiting until Saturday to mow the lawn (will be at granddaughters graduation tomorrow), had lunch and was ready to go fishing. Allowed myself two hours for the afternoon, and another two hours of evening fishing with a power nap in between.

Walked out on the town bridge in Deposit at about 1:00 and the same boat that has been anchored there Tuesday and Wednesday was there again today. Mike said they are there by10:00 and never move. Well, they do move, when they saw me walking up the shore one guy jumped out and sloshed 75 feet upstream to apparently protect their spot, did the same thing as I was walking back downstream almost three hours later (no one has seen them catch a fish yet).

The bugs - After seeing almost no bugs in the chilly water yesterday, todays bright sun had both apple caddis and size 16 Hendricksons hatching and the fish were feeding (mostly on caddis pupa, subsurface). The evening had all kinds of bugs on the water when I arrived but the cold air seemed to shut things down.

The fishing - Had an enjoyable time trying to find surface feeders and get a drag free cast to them in a brisk downstream wind. Never had to stick the reel in the water to cool it off but I was able to hook enough nice fish that the time seemed to just fly by. It was 4:15 when I got back to the car. Had no problem falling asleep in the recliner when I got to camp. Woke at 7:08 (the PC was still on my lap) and got ready for the evening fishing. Checked the weather and there was a frost alert so I had to cover the plants and bring the pots up on the porch. Wanted to try the EB but I was tired from the afternoon fishing, and the place I had in mind has a steep climb to get back to the car. Lordville was already occupied by five wade fishermen so I went in search of unoccupied water. Arrived with fish rising and bugs on the water, hooked a nice brown right off the bat and then strangely things slowed down. I hooked two more sippers, landed the browns and lost the rainbow. Cleaned off my fly after losing the rainbow, looked up and had nothing to throw at. Everything just came to a halt with at least a half an hour of light left. Got in the car and watched the temp drop from 67 to 53 on the car thermometer while driving back to the camp..
