Sitting home looking at the fishing reports, couldn't help but notice that since July 1st, the Delaware River Club's fish of the day photos have shown a total of four fish, only one of which contained the notation that it was caught on a dry. DRC has experienced guides and by all accounts do a great job for their clients, the absence of photos is just a commentary on how difficult it now is to catch the Delaware River fish. (In May and early June their page often had half a dozen pictures each day.)
Took the time to sort through the steno and sulfur boxes in my vest. I usually tie a dozen or more flies a week which go into one of those little round boxes in the top pocket of my vest. The more flies that end up in the little round box, the greater the chance of a catastrophe when opening the box. Discarded a surprisingly small number of flies from each box, added the contents of the little round box and am now ready to go.
Got a note from the Grammarian, who I'm happy to report, was on the job all the while. What may have happened was that because the groin pull made sleeping difficult to impossible, I was able to read the reports in the early hours of the morning and make corrections myself before the Grammarian reported for work. In any event we're all glad he's still on board. (The stroll through the hay field on Friday let me know that the groin pull is not yet 100% healed.)
DY wanted to know why the upper river was devoid of anglers after the afternoon sulfur hatch. First of all, everyone should know that when I want to make a point, I tend to deal in absolutes. The upper river pools are not always empty after the afternoon sulfur hatch but it would not be unusual for you to be the only one fishing the red barn or up at the Stilesville parking lot. It's the coldest water and when the sun is no longer heating it up, it quickly becomes too cold for even the sulfurs to hatch. No bugs, no rising fish, ergo no fishermen.
Ed S. asked if he could walk up to the Abutment pool from Corbett. You could, but it would be a long walk, better to go over the bridge, turn left at the intersection and drive up river two or three miles.
Duke - asked about blind casting a couple of weeks ago. I said I would try to get David to find the report I did on the subject several years ago. Will remind him tomorrow and repost it if he finds it.
Hoping Lordville gets a bit of rain from the t-boomers predicted for this afternoon, I forgot to water the tomatoes before leaving yesterday morning.
