Five Short Minutes Of Lovin' - - -

When people ask me where I'm going to fish, I often say, the first place I find with no fishermen in it. It's not that I don't ever have a plan, because I do, but more often than not the plan is changed because another fisherman's plan was to get to the same place fifteen minutes before I did.

My plan this morning was to give the Lordville riff it's weekly exam. The fish almost all move to cooler water during the hot summer months and by fishing the pool once a week it gives me an indication of fish movement back to their home pools. I've fished it the last three weeks and am averaging 1.33 fish per trip. With the water temp now ideal, I was anxious to see if any fish had moved back home despite the very low water levels. At 10:30 this morning with the porch temp approaching 60, I drove over to the other side of the tracks, (this is a concession to my age as I used to walk), only to find not one, but four anglers taking the very same survey I was going to take. Hopefully they will post the results for all to see.

Will never admit to being bored at the Lordville Estate, but it took a long time for the clock to roll around to evening fishing time. Left at five with yet another plan. Have evening fished upstream from Hale Eddy once a week for the past four weeks, It's been good, last week I saw almost no bugs but caught three very nice fish. Against my better judgement I went back. In an hour and fifteen minutes I saw but two rises, both too far away to even think of casting to. With the sun kissing the tops of the hills goodnight, I bailed.

Drove back downstream to where the bugs have been hatching and the fish have been rising. Was in the water at 7:05 and back in the car at 7:55, chatted briefly with the angler that was already there to see where he wanted to fish, went well below him and with a new leader that sent flies where I wanted them to go, hooked and landed four fish, two browns and two 'bows all between 11 and 14 inches. Less than an hour of fishing in a twenty-four hour day doesn't seem quite fair, but when it's on, everything else is forgotten.
