This Will Be The Last Time, It May Be The Last Time, I Don't Know.
Should you ever wonder, Norway Maples are not my favorite tree. They grow very large and have a dense dark canopy. The leaves do not turn orange or red during the fall and the GD leaves stay on the tree until mid November. Why anyone would plant them in their yard is beyond me. Arrived about noon and got rid of the leaves that had fallen, by 5:00 another batch covered the ground and it doesn't look like the tree has lost a leaf.
With the lawn cleaned up, I left camp at 2:30 for a ride-around. A breeze of about 10 mph kept a ripple on the BR and I saw no rises there. Stopped at Shehawken and waited ten or fifteen minutes for a boat I saw up river pull in. Didn't see a bug on the water but did see two rises. The fisherman in the bow of the boat was throwing a red bobber and said they to had also seen two rises on their journey from Balls Eddy.
With the browns spawning, (hopefully we get rain soon so that they can get up the tribs), I decided to try for rainbows in the BK. Stopped at a pool where I hooked, (and lost), four 'bows on my last trip and saw nary a rise, until I turned the car around to head back. The fish were going along the near bank in the shadows, in six feet of water. Drove to a second pool and saw several fish rising, put on the waders and promptly put the first two fish down before even making a cast. At 180cfs, the BK is low, clear and a wake in the slow water pools quells the rise. Spooked a third fish before finding two fish willing to eat my fly. A rainbow of 11 inches and surprisingly a nice male brown of a little over 17 inches made it "a good day to be on the river" as the DRC likes to say.
Returned to Lordville in time to watch a combo of six does and fawns, and two beautiful fox modeling their winter coats, spend the last hour of daylight in the backyard.
It's a long time 'til Hendricksons, and if you are bored and just want to get out of the house, take a drive. The oaks are still colorful, some reds and yellows and some turning light brown. Never in my life have we had a fall like this, yes, we need rain, but day after day of cloudless skies, bright sunshine and fall leaves that have lasted a full month. Any fishing is a bonus, the fish were up on the BK late in the afternoon but as soon as the sun was off the water the bugs and fish both quit. Last trip the bugs went 'til dark on the WB.
I'll be down a couple more time raking Norway Maple leaves, if I fish, I'll let you know
