Wind knots and tailing loops.

Dennis has been waiting patiently for the answer(s) to his casting questions so here goes.  First of all I am self taught as a fly caster. Back when I started in the mid fifties there were no guides or casting instructors (or videos on how to avoid wind knots and tailing loops either for that matter).  Corrections to my casting stroke came slowly and without much thought on my part.  It was almost as if my right arm and the rod got together and said "Lets help this guy out, he's never going to get it on his own". When a guide 20 years ago told me to make a reach cast I had no idea what he was talking about.  Not much has changed since then.  It's the best explanation I can give before saying I don't even know what a check cast is.  What I can tell you is that my right arm and the good old Winston IM6 work in wondrous ways to often create drag free, on target casts that leave the rest of me in awe of what just happened. With regard to  my position...

Who knew the window of opportunity would be opened so wide?

Stayed in this morning and tied flies. A couple of  innovative iso patterns that I hoped would work, a  very small spinner, four brown fall caddis and half a dozen pseudos.  Before going out I checked the release at Stilesville and found out that they are shutting off the water to make a repair to the pipe.  The dewatering of the upper WB will probably do serious damage to the caddis population that has added a new dimension to the upper WB in recent years. The caddis nymphs can't follow the water drop as well as the mayfly nymphs and many will be left to die on a dry stream bed. Armed with the knowledge of  the planned release decrease, I headed for the BR, unfortunately so had everyone else.  Changed plans and decided to try the BE, which after the rise of water late last week should be full of fish.  Had gotten down the steep bank and walked several hundred yards along the stream before I noticed that the shoreline had changed.  The out o...

Bear with me!

Have had a good week of fishing.  After the big bugs the fishing  usually gets tougher.  When the Big River and Big East get too warm to  fish it puts extra pressure on the West Branch.  This week you could  fish anywhere and I did, picking spots that were too shallow or too  far down river for boats.  Fishing in the morning got me away from most of the wade fishermen. In the evenings I stayed away from the WB. The result was a solid week of fishing that was as good as any week  I've had this year.  Yesterday morning was no exception.  With the Big  River and EB warming up I fished a long riff on the WB and found large  browns and bows willing to eat my flies.  For a change I landed most  of them.  Took the afternoon off and went to the upper EB for the evening.  The  floating goop that I called brown algae is rock snot.  It's awful as  it gets on your line and fly and won't come off....
