Football and volleyball rule this weekend.

 As luck would have it our granddaughter's NDSU team won the 5:00 o'clock match in three sets. At 6:30 I put the second coat of paint on a beam on the front of the garage, put away the paint, washed the brush and at 6:45 headed out into the Lordville riff. The riff hasn't been kind to me this year but at 6:45 there only was one choice. 

Surprisingly there were small olive spinners (lots of them) and a few big red ones. Saw several fish make subsurface boils. Two of them came up let me know my big red spinner and little olive spinner didn't pass muster. My iso and a white fly were ignored. Finally one fish ate a smaller rusty spinner. Landed a 17 inch older rainbow with fresh hook cuts on both corners of his mouth. Was back at the fishing camp before 7:45.

Dennis - My good wife often tells me "Not everyone understands your sense of humor".  I welcome your questions. You obviously have made major improvements in your fishing and hopefully the questions you ask are helpful to others. The freestones (BK, BR and EB) have the best iso hatches and good late season pseudo hatches. The WB and UEB have olives, including the pseudos, and some isos. If you find isos hatching there will probably be hebes (IMO they are one of the two most overrated fall fly hatches)  hatching as the daily iso hatch winds down. White flies are hatching but if you want to see a heavy hatch of them you should go below Hankins on the BR.

BC - If you'd ask me that question back in June I'd have said I have a little arthritis in my thumbs but it doesn't affect my fishing. About July 15th I got a cortisone shot in my right wrist and am probably going to get another one soon. Injured the wrist years ago but somehow it never bothered my casting until July this year. The PA who gave me the shot said you can get up to four a year and that they should last about six weeks. Mine lasted  three weeks. Of course most people don't spend 25 to 35 hours a week waving a fly rod around either.

The fishing - You know how it has been. Well take a look at the Stilesville gage and the weather forecast for the weekend. Two years ago in October they cut back the flow to somewhere in the 200's to supposedly make a repair, it was cold, the pseudos came and I had a 30+ fish day. Don't know where the flow or the air temp will end up this weekend (probably too warm) but if you don't spin the wheel the odds are you'll never win.

  Headed down to the Lordville Estate about nine this morning after watching a nice buck decide  not to tend the scrape I was perched above. Drove through Deposit where the Troutfitter Shop was dark and closed for the season. My fishing equipment did not make the trip. The doe with two fawns was in the backyard when I arrived and was joined by the orphaned button buck who spends his time either bedded down in my flower garden or walking around under the peach trees looking for the peaches he grew so fond of in September. IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK HOME AGAIN!

 It's Wednesday night, a fire is going in the fire place, an empty Perfect Manhattan glass is washed and back up on the shelf, 30 shrimp netted from Zane Gray Creek ((did you know that Zane Gray (famous fly fisherman and writer of westerns) was a dentist and that his office is now a museum that you can visit on the Delaware River?)), have been consumed by Jean and me, prior to the three pieces of venison backstrap that traveled from home to Florida and back, an early spring snowstorm is raging outside and most importantly, we're glad to be back home again! With that season opening sentence, Mrs. Haskins has no doubt thrown in the towel and disavowed all responsibility for my literary malfunctions. Run on sentences she could handle, but my never before attempted "double aside" was apparently beyond the pall. A rational explanation escapes me.

 Yesterday after driving up and down the "Sulfur Zone" in the afternoon without seeing bugs or rising fish, I headed back to Lordville without even putting my waders on. Headed out again at 6:00, got into the river around 6:30 and had two hours of delightful dry fly fishing to medium sized fish eating duns in a good sulfur hatch. Today, I made the trip up to deposit at about 1:30 figuring the cloud cover would delay the hatch (if any), it did, but by 2:30 the afternoon sulfurs were going and the fish were up and on them. Enjoyed about two hours of good fishing with four decent fish hooked and landed, two yearlings landed and a passel of refusals. About 4:30 the rise forms changed to boils and my fly was ignored. Tried half a dozen flies without so much as a look from the still feeding fish.
