Memories Are Made Of This.
It occurred to me today that I've had no problem lately finding empty pools, trailers at put-ins and take-outs, almost none, and wade fishermen can find a shady spot to park their car at almost every parking area. Why? It's been a tough season from the get go. Water in April too low for boats, then too high for wade fishermen in May and June, poor hatches all year, and then a summer of unrelenting bright sunshine and above average temperatures. It seems that many, if not most, anglers have hung up their rods and are either playing golf, shooting their bow, or waiting for the Epstein files to be released.
Today I decided to continue my trip down memory lane, (It started two days ago, I just don't tell you everything), by fishing two places on the UEB I haven't fished in years and one on the BR for the first time this year. Got permission from at a Blue Stone Company exec. to access the river through their back lot but couldn't get through the multiflora roses and Knot Weed. Knocked on a door and was greeted by Dick who introduced me to his father Richard, said his brother in law was also named Dick as was his nephew, quietly so his dad couldn't hear he said, "Lotta Dicks in our family". Sent me down a shortcut that went through seven foot tall giant ragweed and nine foot tall corn to an access road, stepped onto the access road turned left and there was the river 10 feet away. Walked over to the bank and put down a dozen fish that had been rising right at the road's end. Found another pod of fish "just around the bend", hooked two, landed one and all went quiet. Walked back out and moved to a second place I hadn't fished in years. Fish were rising but on what I had no clue, hooked and landed a 10 incher and had one refusal, left with the fish still rising.
Third stop was on the BR at Junction Pool, (Bard Parker to old timers), saw a couple rises downstream so I walked down. Both fish rose right in front of me and were happy to eat my Cahill. One an 19+ inch brown with what was probably a talon cut in his back, the other another 18 inch rainbow that I seem to be catching lately. Should have reeled it in right then and there. Hooked and quickly lost a rainbow in the riff below, (saw but one iso there), and then walked all the way up past the parking lot and muddy shoreline to fish the foam line between the EB and WB water. There were no fish rising! Back in the car at 8:38.
