Sunday Morning Coming Down.

 

With Jean out walking with her sister, I finished up the things I had to do back home, fed the trout in the pond, packed food and clothes in the car and departed Lafayette so as to be in time to fish this evening.

 The drive down showed that Mother Nature has been busy turning summer into fall despite the warmer than usual daytime temperatures. The fallow fields are a bright carpet of yellow as the golden rod's tall stalks dwarf the other plants, the vine that climes the hardwoods along the road, and goes unnoticed all summer, is now bright red, the sumacs have started to turn but have a ways to go, the swamp maples along 81 near Preble are all a brilliant red while most of the wooded hills are just starting to show a muted rust color. 

It seems like forever since the last rain. The release from Cannonsville has been stepped up to 800cfs and is drawing more silt into the river, Wallenpaupack has been running most days and still can draw down the reservoir another foot and a half before October 1st. Without rain the freestones are mere puddles with both the BK and EB maxing out over seventy again today in the bright sun. There were between six and ten trailers at all of the takeouts and both boats and wade fishermen seemed to be everywhere. 

The fishing - Picked a place below a takeout and saw neither boats nor waders. Arrived streamside at 5:45 expecting to see olives in good numbers as the bugs were plentiful the last time the release was raised. Tonight, not so much, there were almost no bugs on my arrival, then the usual suspects appeared along with a few Hebes which DRC has been mentioning but which I hadn't seen. The hatch was fair at best and tapered off before dark. The fish were unimpressed. Risers were hard to find. Four ate with no apparent concern about the possibility of being hooked. Another half dozed were less impressed with my offerings. Walked out before dark with only a few bugs on the water and no fish rising.

The outlook - Unless it rains the best place to fish remains the BR. Hopefully the additional release will get the bugs going and the fish feeding there. Even with the elevated release, wading levels on the BR are good and the water is still quite clear.

Fishing A Cold Blow From Out Of The North.

  Jean came down and we spent the weekend watching wildlife in the backyard, driving around the area and enjoying two "nights out", one with David and Maryann, (the apprentice Troutfitter Inn cleaning lady). A shout out of thanks to her for spending four hours on the road to have dinner with us. Not sure the company or the meal was worth the drive. We drove up to Stilesville to witness the hordes of anglers, and then along the reservoir all the way up to Walton, where we usually stop and go in some of the shops. Don't let that that rain come down.

 My South Holston river friend, (one of only two people who will fish with me), (the other is currently on injured reserve), is up for a visit (he brought his boat) and today we floated. There might have been some question about where we chose to float (no one else launched where we did), but we enjoyed the fact that we never saw another fisherman, let alone another boat, on the river all day. The weatherman might well have gilded the lily a bit when he predicted a chance of showers and a high temp of sixty degrees. It rained all day, and the temperature peaked at fifty three degrees. When I read the forecast for the rest of Mark's stay (rain for the next four days) I was thankful that we got in the day that we did today.  How was our day? We sucked it up, paid an extra $5.00 to launch (didn't have the proper change), parked in the wrong place (got a note from the owner where we put in), never made it to the predetermined takeout place, and had a delightful day counting bugs (...

The closure.

 Picked one of the most beautiful November days imaginable to drive down to Lordville and shut down the estate. Bright sun, early morning fog, with flocks of geese on their way out to cut cornfields to feed. Temps varied from 45 to 35 depending on the fog density. The trees are bare, save for a few oaks  and larch with color but the hills are basically gray.  I've been busy in Lafayette. Spend an hour or two each morning and evening up in a tree hoping for a buck to come by. So far the only buck I've seen in real life has been what is now a unicorn. A week ago when he walked around not 20 yards in front of me he sported two slightly curved six inch spikes. Last night when he walked right under my other stand he was missing one of his horns.  In addition to the hunting we had loggers come and fell almost 100 dead and dying ash trees that had fallen victim to the Emerald ash borer.
