No time for a nap today.

Today was a busy day. Had a short business meeting at 8:00, by 9:00 Jean and I were in the kitchen (she was there at 8:00 peeling peaches) doing three batches of peach jam.  At 10:00 we were doing final cleanup to the sound of popping lids.  If you are a canner, you love the sound of popping lids. Was in the car headed for Lordville shortly after the cleanup.  Stopped at the Troutfitter in Deposit to buy a couple of leaders and then drove down to the L.V. E.  By 1:30 food was in the fridge, clothes were in the drawers and after a quick lunch, I was ready to go fishing.

Drove back up to Deposit and saw quite a few bugs but no risers in the big pool below the Town bridge. The releases from both reservoirs are being cut back and the water levels are getting better for waders hour by hour. Don't know if there aren't enough sulfurs in the afternoon hatch or if the water is still too high but there were not a lot of fish up. Was able to catch fish but really had to work for them. By six things were dead and I got in the car and drove over to the UEB.

The UEB is down to a really good wading level ( 500 cfs) and I wanted to give it a try. Arrived about 6:30 (way too early) and had nothing but juvenile fish to throw at and not many of those.  Debated a panic pullout but finally decided to stay 'till dark.  It wasn't great but, like the WB, I was able to catch fish, yearlings at first, then a few two and three year olds just before dark.  A rainbow of 17 inches from the WB tied a 17 inch holdover hatchery brown from the UEB tied for fish of the day.

If you are expecting to find afternoon sulfur hatches like last year, you are going to be disappointed. There are afternoon bugs and with the water level being dropped rapidly there's no telling how lower water levels will effect the fishing. Haven't stayed late on the WB recently so I don't know how the evening sulfur hatch has been. Plan on finding out tomorrow.
